History

The former Montpelier School built in 1929 is an important landmark to Western Hanover
County. This brick structure is the last surviving public building in Hanover County
constructed by funds raised solely by the local citizens during the Depression to provide an
education for their children. Today, this highly visible landmark stands as a symbol of
Virginia's tradition of caring, contributing, and providing opportunities.

By 1988, the Montpelier School lay abandoned and scheduled for demolition by the County.
Community leaders upon learning of the planned demolition organized the Save Our School
Foundation. Funds were raised and restorations began. In 1991, the building was renamed
The Montpelier Center for Arts & Education and was granted 501(c)(3) status.

In January 1996, the Pamunkey Regional Library opened. In January 1998, final restorations
were completed. Today, programs are continually expanding to meet diverse demands of our
members and the surrounding areas.

By supporting The Montpelier Center for Arts & Education, you are helping build on a
foundation created by many volunteers. Today, approximately 30,000 people in this region
utilize the services provided by The Center and this number increases annually.
