About Alice Simon
The Shenandoah Valley surrounded by the Blue Ridge Mountains provided rich outdoor imagery for a visual learner. Painting became a way to share my thinking with others. Further study in art was necessary, and Virginia Art Institute was perfect as a beginning. My professor, Mort Traylor, became a mentor who guided me with tremendous skill and inspiration. His constant encouragement was a huge motivating factor in my life. He became the nudge I needed to pursue a career in education. At Virginia Commonwealth University, I completed work for a Bachelor of Fine Arts and Master of Interdisciplinary Studies. As I explored a variety of media, they enabled an art teacher to offer greater diversity and opportunities for students while building the background of tools available for painting. Styles, histories, and applications all become musical, as they were woven together to communicate a subject. Oddly, different languages of techniques and mediums become necessary with lifestyle changes and challenges which have been grabbed, cherished, and explored. Always learning and growing to see new combinations of layers, colors, and mood, my technique and life developed. New notes are to be heard in each painting, so look closely, and you too will hear the paint.
