J.M. Holland Art Exhibit
These paintings were inspired by time spent running and walking along the James River, taking in the beauty of the rocks, water, and sky. Each piece reflects a memorable moment in nature and the emotions it inspired. Influenced by artists like Edvard Munch and Vincent van Gogh, the work also draws from Japanese prints, graphic novels, and street art to create bold colors and expressive shapes. The exhibition follows four series created over nearly 30 years: Ghost Buildings (1995–2005), Inside Outbuildings (2005–2015), Barn Spires (2015–2020), and On the Rocks (2020–Present). Rather than simply depicting the landscape, these paintings invite viewers to slow down, experience nature in a new way, and find beauty in a world that is constantly changing.
